The Blackhouses of Gearrannan on the Isle of Lewis are very special, these traditional houses are now preserved as a stunning museum. Extremely quaint and cosy to our modern eye, but the harshness of their reality is in the name “Blackhouse”! Built of stone and driftwood, their design hardly changed from the stone age. They housed people and their animals beneath one roof, originally with no windows or chimneys they were obviously very black, sooty dark places to dwell once upon a time!
