The Ostler’s cottage sits on the edge of Stearman’s Yard car park in Wells-next -the-Sea on the North Norfolk coast. There are a pair of these one-up-one-down cottages either side of the entrance to the onetime ostler’s yard the last remaining ostler’s cottages in the area, dating back to the mid 18th century. When Wells-next -the Sea was a major port with goods coming in and out and people travelling by coach to then take a sea connection. The ostlers would take care of the traveller’s horses, and those that pulled the coaches and wagons. This cottage is the remnant of a bygone era, a curiosity for the tourists as they join the long summer queue at the parking ticket machine. A very early work of mine.
